Possible Rawson & Evans piece

Post by Andrew Lawrence » Thu Dec 19, 2013 3:12 am

Hey All -

I found this sign on Ebay and after consulting the R&E catalog, I had a feeling it was a genuine piece so I threw in the money quickly on it and won. It's in the mail right now and hopefully arrives in one piece to which I'll give a follow up, just wondering what all you guys think - is it a genuine Rawson & Evans piece? A few clues like the treatment on the "J" & "C", the fact that it appears to be glue chipped, the layout and that the company they made it for "Paul J Daemicke" was a manufacturer of refrigerators based in Chicago where they were active all pointed to it being a genuine piece. Even if it's not, it's a cool little sign and will hang nicely on the wall. I used to live in Chicago for a while too so there's that connection too.

Nice Score Andrew.!

It appears to be a Western Sandblast Sign and not a Rawson & Evans.

The current wood frame is not original.

So don't feel bad if you want to switch it out with a different frame.

You paid a fair price for it.

My fingers are crossed that it makes it to you in one piece.

The ebay listing states the following:

"This company manufactured store fixtures including Butcher Boy Refrigerators/meat lockers/coolers/butcher counters/ and more."

Here is a photo of a Butcher Boy Glass Sign...supposedly also a Western Sand Blast piece.

Oops...I almost forgot....See if you can latch on to this product catalog.

It might show you where on the cooler your sign was once mounted.

What is the treatment on the letters of these signs? The sign that is photographed on the couch does not appear to be glue chipped, as it is quite even and complete especially in the finer letters. It also appears to be too deep to be a acid/mica stipple. Looks more like acid rotting. Or maybe the rotting technique where tempera paint is sponge stippled over the areas to be acid rotted. ie: Done with glass face down in acid bath allowing the convection currents of the eroding glass to create a highly polished and irregular bite into the glass surface. During this rotting process, the tempera paint begins to fall away at different intervals, adding the the irregularity of the acid rotted areas.
Maybe you can post sharper photos of the process used when you receive the piece. Or give a better assessment of the letter treatment.

Hey Pat -

I'll let you know when the piece comes in. Currently it's in transit somewhere in the Chicagoland area so it might be a few before I get it. Was thinking about bringing to Larry's place for him to inspect. You hear that Larry? He's a pretty good sleuth when it comes to stuff like this. Thanks again Robare!

Well the Sign came in one piece! Definitely glue chipped with some cracking on the backing paint and a little tarnishing on the gild. Cloudy day in SF so everything is a little darker than in person.

Nice score ! The mirroring isn't to bad for a piece that old. I'm not sure is is an R&E piece though. The one I've had included their trademark but it could be .

Talked to Super Sleuth Robare about it and he thought it was a Western Sand Blast piece based off of past auctions. Never saw a trademark on this one. Where'd you look Roderick?
