good ol' days... step by step

took last weekend off, Monday was pretty cold and misty, so I prepared three more patterns.
Tuesday, came back, finished the green block in and the right side, and began detailing the leaves.

wednesday, 12/10...

after finishing leaf ornament details, added three patterns to the main scene, sharpied in and blocked in some color

wednesday night back in shop, projected last three patterns on paper.
Pounced holes into pattern paper Thursday morning.
About 10:30am, I returned to the wall.
After slapping the chalk filled bags over the pounced pattern paper, the chalk lines are now on the wall.
I followed by drawing over the chalk lines with a jumbo sharpie, in case of rain the lines won't disappear.



Now all the patterns are finshed and all marks drawn on the wall.
Nothing left but paint, until I create the text patterns for the bottom panels.



began adding more color blocks, detailed the flag pole and Wells Fargo sign.

after the fog broke at 10:30am, I was back at it ...

first I painted over the lighter tone in the trees... there wasn't enough contrast the first time around, IOAFP...
then, I continued to block and detail the main scene.
I'm working top down, and across... if rain does come and stay around, I can call off the boom and go to ladders and planks comfortably from the remaining heights.





5 more hours today.

Tony, I'm loving following your progress here!- this is absolutley amazing work, I've lettered walls over here myself, and I know how slow it can go, -But never done anything that ambishous .

Well, looks like the rain's let up a bit. ...if it don't, there'll be trout fishing right there on Sarcramento Street!

I remember the coldest ... winters, my whole body freezin’ up, murals, couldn’t even paint ‘em, funny, I just think about Christmas. Well, that’s me...that’s me. Fireplace, someone waitin’ for ya. Winters can be cold, Jenco, I remember lots of ‘em. Ya, just the smell of someone familiar, the sound of somethin’ other than your own ... shadow...and a warm fire...

I know, some of you are lookin for more updates, and , I can understand it. What I don't understand is the hurry.

Last Saturday, 12/13, I spent an hour putting 15 gallons of deisel into the boom, and painted for two hours before having to break for one of those fandangled holiday parties.
I clean up real good, you know.

The painting I did add, was again, from left to right ,moving down the mural in preparation for the wet weather coming.
That rain got here Sunday thru Tuesday. Pretty cold today, might be able to paint from noon to 4pm. Temp will be 40 -45 degrees.
More rain tomorrow and Friday. Window of opportunity Sat and Sun, then I have the equipment picked up next week and close down for the year.
When I return next year, all remaining work will be easy to reach from ladders and planks.









That's enough for now, two young ladies want to take me for sushi before I paint today.

Look, Mr Black, I'm a very busy man and I don't get paid for idle conversation.

Oh, and Armand... I'll get back to you on all the pounce defintions.
Heck, I might even come over and show you.

well, I'm a man of my word. Told 'em I'd be back in January...
so on the 29th, I returned with ladders and planks, boards and boxes to place in the trench along the wall...
working heighth is 14' on down...


after 15 minutes, I had enough of that kind of foolishness, moving all those items up and down the wall can wear on a man,
so, I called in the boom and it was on site within two hours. In the meantime, I blocked in the base color of the banners and
began the detail in the right oval...





Feelin much better now, and working like a satyr....I finished the first image

back over the weekend, I began the left oval vignette..







then, moved into the center pictorial....so, by the end of yesterday, here I am..
after the fog lifts, I'll be back this morning





and, when I get ahead, I'll reply to a few of those earlier questions...

5 more hours on Tuesday, added more detail in the main pictorial...



Wednesday, with the end in sight... and more rain on the way,
I finished the detail in the main pictorial, and then, after my lunch break,
clean up the edges of the inside of the ovals, added contour shading to the red banners,
and painted the base coats of the final borders.
The bottom panel and the two banners while contain brief title/descriptive text....
but that won't be for a week or so.





That's enough for now, come on in, its gonna rain.

Finished the mural about an hour ago.
I'll post final steps and finished project soon...

Last Wednesday, March 11, the majority of seasonal rains are gone, and the wall has dried, ready to finsh this project.
Spent the afternoon, creating the patterns for the text to be lettered below the three pictorials.
Can't remember how long, but long...
about 115 minutes it took, the length of the movie Appaloosa rolling in the background.

Thursday, March 12,
applied the patterns and lettered the text in the two red banners.
Added the two horizontal borders at the bottom of each oval area.
Detailed the center bottom wood border, with shadows and faux wood coloring
to be ready for the lettering on Friday.

Friday, the 13th, pretty day for making things right.

Applied text pattern for center pictorial. Lettered in about 2 1/2 hours.
Added depth shadowing to bottom 'victorian' ornaments in the corners.
And completed the mural with lightening highlights in the center pictorial...
adding more depth and definition to the two horses and cart.
Now, that I'm happy, it's finished.









I debated about adding more...like a shadow under the entire image.
I questioned that a lot, and my wall pup daughter stopped by and reminded me...
IOAFS.

I can't say enough about the Benjamin Moore Aura line of paints.
All lettering was done with a single stroke / coverage. That may not have happened with other exterior latex.
And adding paint where there was not a prime base coat was irrelevant.

In the next couple of days, I will tally time spent and materials used.
I know some of you are wondering the price of a project like this, so, instead,
after you know the facts... you price it!

Just remember...
every man has a right to make a profit.

I don't know what IOAFS means but I think it needs a shadow on the whole shape including the Green leaves,ovals ,red scrolls and bottom.
If it means me coming up there to help well then I guess I'd hafta, afta the chemical lounge.
