Gary GodbyHere's a section of interest from Atkinson's last book:
------------------------------------------------------------------
On a single piece of plate glass or American crystal exectue neat black letter; add a shade of burnished silver leaf. On a second glass panel (same size), have local monument work SAND BLAST the SURFACE, return it to the studio and apply an even coat of hot strong cabinet glue to sand blasted surface and place in a warm room - 80 or 90 degree temperature. As the glue hardens, the chipping starts; when completely chipped and dusted, "size" in Fat Oil - over night. Next morning gild in aluminum leaf and press down with plush covered stencil roller, or large wad of used cotton; then rub to high burnish. Next fasten the two plates together with friction tape - to be framed in a special deep rabbited frame. Rusulting in a chipped glass job the appearance of a single plate job by Rawson and Evans.

This Atkinson book was printed in 1950.

Mike,
Do you by chance have all four of his books ( or were there more than four?).
I consider myself lucky to have 4 different ones myself.

Robare M. NovouGary,
There were four if you count the different editions of the first big one as just one.
Atkinson Sign Painting (several editions and sizes-one includes the billboard sketches)
Atkinson Scene Painting and Bulletin Art
Atkinson A Show at Showcards (two or more editions- 2 sizes)
Atkinson Last and Final Book on Sign Art
Atkinson self published and self promoted the last book. Mine is signed by himself, but I suspect most of them are.
Yep, lucky to own them!
Mike
Mike JacksonMine is not signed...his ad for the book said that he would sign the first 300 he sold.
I guess I got 301.
Do any of you have the 1937 edition of the Atkisons sign painting book?
Green Hard cover with black embossed coverart.

Robare,
I have two of the Atkinson's Sign Painting books. Interestingly, I thought they were different editions since they are different sizes and the larger one is also thicker. When I checked for the 1937 year, I see that both are 1915 editions of the 1909 book. Both of these have the billboard section. Go figure!
