Gilding masonery wall prep

Post by Steven Vigeant »

Can some one please advise
I need to repaint a black background that has old deep cracks coming through the cement. Should it be elastomeric then flat latex, or Chromatic matte black? You do want it to be a matte background behind the gold right? Jay Cooks primer first? Any tips would help.

Well I can see not too many have had experience with this one so I'll give it a shot.....aside from doing tests whenever possible the Raymind Leblanc Bokk with edits by Kent Smith is a good start. They seem to cover almost everything and I hope you've left yourself some time on this job.

You might contact Sherwin Williams and see if they still sell Traffic Marking White. Monte Jumper suggested we use it on a wall project in old Bricktown in Oklahoma City a long time ago. It is the paint designed to stick to asphalt and concrete used to make the stripes on highways. They add in the glass beads to make it reflective prior to painting. It is fairly thick, similar to block out white.

That's just one suggestion worth looking into. I am sure there are newer hi-tech products. Are you really going to lay a lot of 23k gold on a brick wall?

Steve,
I remembered I had this old article from a Hastings Gold Leaf newsletter from the forties or fifties. It doesn't help much with your prep. question, but it can and has been done.
A little over the top, eh?
