Gold Leaf Glass Sign/ mueseum show

Post by Roderick Treece »

I happen to live down the street from the Gemological Institute of America. They just opened the 75th aniversary diamond and gem show this week. Some of the big names that came were, Madeleine Albright and Nadja Swarovski.
Nadji Swarovski is the owner of Swarovski Crystals Co.She can all the way from london to attend. If you don't know already the make alot of the crystals we use for our sign work.

Now the reason I think this is important to our group is that they are very open to mueseum shows regarding anything to do with Jewlery ,gems ,crystals, fine metals, Gold and silver.

I am going to contact them regarding having a show of Gold Leaf glass signs that would have all those things envoled.I have in my collection two gold leaf glass signs that are from old jewelery stores. Also other signs that have lots of crystals.I know a few of you that have other very cool signs that would be perfect for just such a show.

It would be a great opportunity to be able to show case the work we love to do at a very good location.

Anyone interested please get ahold of me to see if we can work something out.

Hey Rod - your post on the museum show was a while back - have you received any replies yet? It sure would be one good way to build a market for glass signs. How are people going to order them if they don't know what effects and techniques are possible? Everybody is so sure its a "lost art" that they cross off the idea before they've tried to find out if its still alive. Stained glass had the same problem before it turned into a "hobby" - those "hobbiests" sure do spend a lot of money!

Sara,
Thanks for the post.
After many attempts to bring up this subject with many of the people I respect and admire for their glass sign work it seams that it is falling on deaf ears.
I have no idea why they are not able to see the importance of getting together as a group to market and promote what I find to be a very beautiful and totally unique art form.Works from the turn of the century sell for thousands of dollars. That was when they were production runs.At this point in time most people are making one or two of each piece as an art form.

Many see it as only just a sign but it is truly an art form.If you look through out modern art history you can find all kinds or reference to signs and graphic arts by really famous artists. Some of those artists were in fact sign or billboard paniters.
At this point in history the people involved in "The Glass Sign Movement" ( maybe 20+-) as I would like to call it are religated to their own private museums by there own choice.
I am finding the more time and effort I spend promoting it the more attention it gets and the more work I get. I think it would be great if we all got together to help promote what we love doing, making and selling GLASS SIGNS.
At this point in time there doesn't seem to be any interest in this subject and I have felt for a long time that I would not bring it up again.
With all the interest we have as a loose knit group it seems like a waste to have it just for meets, deadmans and private museums.

...or, perhaps everyone is so busy, they haven't had a chance to get on the board and reply. I think when things are slow here, it means folks are busy.

I'm interested, and perhaps with some more refined details, would make a commitment to participate. Lord knows I have enough that belong to my personal family stable.

...Oh, by the way, where's a picture of your finished Dead Man sign?

Sara,
Thanks so much for putting a small fire under this, what I thought might be a dead subject.
Larry,The whole idea in my mind is to try and make people aware of reverse glass signs to the point that it is collected by people that are aware of the art form.
That can only happen when you create enough of a buzz (for lack of a better word) that it is appreciated for what it is.A rare art form going on around the world by just a few people.
My hope was to be able to have a web site or area on mine that everyone could have a page dedicated to their art glass. That way people could see all the defferent styles and peices that are available.
Also if there were enough people interested we could have gallery shows of the work which helps to create the kind of interest that you need to make the art form viable.
I am ready to approach the GIA museum in Carlsbad Cal about a show but I would need more interest from people before I do.You and I probably have enough work at this point to fill a medium size space.I would prefer that any show represent as many of us as possible.
By the way SEPP LEAF is having a competition for guilded signage.www.seppleaf.com

We will see?

Larry,my peice is done and I will send a photo to you so you can post it.
