Favorite Colors and combinations

Post by Roderick Treece »

During the gatherings I've atttended I have seen a lot of great colors and combinations. It is truly amazing to watch someone mix a color useing colors you would never think of.
I have been asked before " What did you use to make that color" ?

Well I think it would be great to share a few formulas that I like.Hopefuly others will also share theirs.

Dark Maroon
Maroon
Dark green
Dark brown
Purple
(Noel Weber has a great one for this)

Antique Green
White
Dark green
Dark Brown

Rustic purple
Purple
Dark brown
White

These colors are all based on useing ONE -Shot colors .
This is just a start to what I hope will be along list.

Thanks
Roderick

Rod....I've seen many of these also but I have to say that colour descriptions can be somewhat obscure. An example...dark Maroon, quite a few years ago a client that also happened to be a museum, asked for 2 signs with a backgnd of "tuscan red". a colour that is mentioned often in old texts. I replied that i'd never actually seen tuscan red and they're reply...we'll supply an example. It goes without saying that I took a sample for myself and have over the years mixed this colour (exactly) with one-shot maroon and purple. All to say that "tuscan red" and "bottle green" are some of those colours that if you don't got the goods right from the start....you're on a scientific adventure. Finding old tubes etc etc

Doug,
How right you are.I like your Dark Maroon.
At one of the gold leaf work shops I took Noel had a good formula for it as well but I can remember what it was.

Speaking of somewhat obscure descriptions,a few years back my wife asked me to paint our bed with a glazed color she called "Butter".Well I took a stick of butter and matched it.When she came I was in deep you -know-what.She called it "Citrus Whip".Go figuire.
8 years later a customer just asked me to paint a fade yellow background "Butter".I told him the story and that he had to pick a color.

Here's a nice antique green I just made.
Dark Green
Imatation Gold
White
Dark Brown

Antique Deep Orange Gold
Clear crackle paint ( Old World Art fracture glaze)
Dirty dark brown glaze over crackes.Leave color just in crackes.
2 coats very thick orange shellack
Oil guild 23k gold leaf

Thanks Doug
Roderick
