Once in a Blue Moon

Post by Mike Jackson »

I copied this from a web page. Interesting!
Once in a Blue Moon ... is a common way of saying not very often, but what exactly is a Blue Moon?
According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month.

The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. This makes it very unlikely that any given month will contain two Full Moons, though it does sometimes happen.

On average, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.

The 2007 Blue Moon: May or June?
Some sources say that in 2007, there is a Blue Moon in June. Others say that the Blue Moon actually occurs in May. Who is right?
Well, you could see a Blue Moon in May, June or even July, but it depends where in the world you live.

HEY! ...I was expecting one of your beautiful photographs of the blue moon rising over the Tetons.

(Well, how about any full moon picture?)

That was exactly what I expected, Larry. The information was interesting though.
Here I'll donate half a prairie moon, sorry Larry, we have no Tetons. Lots of pot holes in the highways though, do they count as inverted mountains?
Moon us Mike. ;)

I believe there is no shame in failure. Rather, the shame lies in the loss of all the things that might have been, but for the fear of failure.

Hi all,
I have quite a few shots of the moon over or near the Tetons. In the summer, the moon is very far south as it sets. With that, I have to drive about an hour north from town. I was up a couple of days ago and the moon was setting over the ridge here in town at 4:45 AM. That'd mean I have to leave here around 3:30 and that'd mean I'd have to be up at 3:00 am and hurry out the door. Ouch! That is way too early for a photo!
